Artist: Carla Graham

A photo of my son standing on his head helped to create this image in my mind. His Asperger's Syndrome baffled me for the first couple of years. How did this happen to my child? I wondered. Who was to blame? Anger and grief clouded my reasoning. I couldn't see the forest for the trees.

Eventually, I was able to accept the truth: the genes he inherited from his father and me predisposed him to autism. There was no one to blame. It was just life happening the way it always has.

The gifts autism presents are numerous. Incredible possibilities lie ahead for our differently abled children. They are brilliant, and they are beautiful. Nothing in the world will be out of reach for them - some day - if we give them the love and support they need to make sense of the neurotypical world.
